In 1609, Galileo Galilei built his refracting telescope with far better magnification power than the ones previously existing (that was before Isaac Newton developed his new, reflecting telescope). The next year, he wrote to Leonardo Donato (Doge of Venice) and, for the first time in history, described the four largest moons of Jupiter that he had just observed using his new instrument.
