In our new article in Mountain Research and Development we discuss the role of spatial planning for energy transitions in the European Alps. We use the Alps as a case study to illustrate currently debated renewable energy transitions in 🇦🇹 Austria, 🇩🇪 Germany, and 🇨🇭 Switzerland—covering solar, wind, and microhydropower—in relation to open spaces. Based on this, we propose 27 research questions as an agenda for future development and governance. 🤝 This article is the result of many years of fruitful exchange with my fantastic colleagues Arthur Schindelegger, Constantin Meyer and Hubert Job; made possible by the Alpine spatial planning network #AlpPlan – a European Working Group managed by the Academy for Territorial Development in the Leibniz Association (ARL - Akademie für Raumentwicklung in der Leibniz-Gemeinschaft).
