For this week's art feature, let's explore a captivating work by Fabienne Verdier: Dara Reaksmey (2024), a silkscreen print from her series Le chant des étoiles (The Song of the Stars). What immediately grabs our attention is the genesis of this creation. The constellations of white dots and light streaks dancing across this deep blue background were not placed with geometric, deliberate precision. Instead, the artist set a brush laden with white paint into motion, carefully controlling the dosage, and let chance guide where the drops fell. This artistic process mirrors modern science in a fascinating way. To explain the architecture of our universe—from the microscopic to the macrocosmic—scientists frequently point to the laws of probability and chance. Standing before this piece, we experience a profound sense of vertigo: the realization that chance is not synonymous with chaos, but is actually the architect of a deeper order. This intuition has echoed through the centuries. In his treatise De Genesi (On Genesis), Saint Augustine spoke of this underlying harmony and the grand design of the creator: "It is in God that there exists the idea of measure, weight, and number which presides over the arrangement of objects." He continued, beautifully capturing how these points of light seem to distribute themselves: "...unless we admit that there was, in the wisdom of the designer, a plan according to which colors were to be distributed over bodies with all their shades? Surely this design conceived by the divine intelligence cannot be called color itself. I repeat, as long as the idea is well understood, the word matters little."
