The Dutch debate often asks: “Do we need less migration?” The new Talent Strategy issued earlier this month by the Dutch government asks a different question: “How do we ensure the Netherlands has the talent needed to remain competitive?” Reading the strategy immediately brought me back to the International Talent Conference and Peter Wennink's report and the discussion around safeguarding the Netherlands' future prosperity through innovation, productivity and talent. The government's ambition is clear: drive long-term economic growth through strategic investment in areas such as AI & digitalisation, energy & climate technology, life sciences, and security & resilience. All sectors where access to talent will be decisive. What stands out to me is the balanced approach to migration. The strategy explicitly recognises that international talent remains critical for future economic growth and innovation, while also increasing the focus on domestic talent development, lifelong learning and productivity improvements. It also signals a move away from dependency on lower-productivity labour migration. The trends behind that discussion are interesting. Student migration continues to be an important talent pipeline for the Netherlands, while highly skilled migration remains one of the main routes through which international expertise enters the Dutch labour market. These trends underline the important connection between education, talent attraction and long-term economic competitiveness. For us at Fragomen, this is a development we are following closely. We continue to hear from clients across industries that access to skilled international talent is a key factor in enabling innovation, growth and competitiveness in the Netherlands. The real challenge is not migration versus growth. It's creating a talent strategy that delivers both. We look forward to discussing with clients what these developments may mean for workforce planning, global mobility programmes and future talent strategies.
