The Russian mathematician Alexander Friedmann (1888–1925) was the first to find time-dependent solutions of Einstein’s equations, describing an evolving cosmos. During World War I, while Einstein was completing his general theory of relativity, Friedmann served as a bomber pilot in the Russian air force. He was awarded a George Cross for bravery. Apart from his work in cosmology, Friedmann did groundbreaking research in hydrodynamics and meteorology. He died of typhoid fever at the age of 37.
