Day 29 Double Bill recco: Rafiki (2018)/Pariah (2011) Country: Kenya, US Language: Swahili, English Rafiki means friend in Swahili, same as Rafiq in Urdu. Any connection? Pariah is an outcast. Both films are coming-of-age stories about lesbian women - one set in Brooklyn, another in Nairobi. The Brooklyn narrative is filmed in saturated tones while the Nairobi narrative is dressed in so many candy colours that it would be a shame to not call it a ghetto soap opera. Underneath its multi-coloured folds, Rafiki has a rather straight-forward drama of two women in love just as the sombre-looking Pariah explores the many anaemic layers in society through one woman's journey in search of love. There's a scene in Pariah where the protagonist is unhappy with a white coloured strap-on dildo and a kaleidoscopic disco scene in Rafiki that are standout moments. Love, in any colour, only becomes more resplendent, as these films reflect. 😎🙏 Rafiki trailer: https://lnkd.in/fDpqkGU Pariah trailer: https://lnkd.in/fdkRU4D
