Day 26 recco: Santa & Andrés (2016) Country: Cuba Language: Spanish In 1983, a counter-revolutionary writer (Andrés) who happens to be gay, is put under house-arrest for three days during a peace forum. Sounds familiar world over, no? The woman (Santa) assigned to watch him has no clue about his leanings. She carries a chair on her shoulders to reach his hut for vigil. She antagonises him, befriends him, saves him from dying, and also tries to kiss him - the last of which is perhaps out of her own need for companionship in the forsaken terrain where the drama takes place. In-between, there are conversations and sequences about literature, politics, freedom - all relevant and depict how artists are muzzled for speaking against oppressive regimes. Not as masterful as Before Night Falls (2000), the Javier Bardem-starrer in which Johnny Depp has a deliciously foxy avatar, this indie drama is still worth a watch for its visual grammar. 🙏😎 Trailer: https://lnkd.in/fXQKMpg
