Today, we celebrate 150 years of Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok, where one half of our story began. Since 1876, The Oriental, affectionately known as La Grande Dame, has welcomed travellers, tastemakers, and storytellers to the banks of the Chao Phraya, shaping not only the spirit of Bangkok, but also the standard of luxury hospitality across Asia. Thailand’s first luxury hotel and a pioneer from the beginning, The Oriental was among the first to introduce electric lighting, and the first to establish a hotel spa and wellness centre on the riverfront. These innovations continue to define the guest experience today. At the heart of La Grande Dame is its service culture, built and upheld by generations of colleagues. From figures such as Khun Ankana Kalatananda, whose remarkable 62‑year tenure helped define our Graceful Asian Style, to the colleagues who bring its spirit to life today, their pride, passion and dedication have shaped the hospitality the world has come to love and return to time and time again.
