Earlier this week, we brought together developers from across Bulgaria's C++ community for an evening to explore the art and science behind extreme performance optimisation. Hosted at our Sofia office in partnership with the Bulgarian Institute for Standardization (BDS) and the Bulgarian C++ Working Group, the meetup featured George Slavov, Engineer at Man Group, presenting a new approach to the GroupBy function. George walked through how data-oriented design enabled him to build a GroupBy engine that outperforms pandas by 10-70x, and the real-world trade-offs involved in moving from simple, general-purpose code to highly specialised routing.
