Can we talk about hydration breaks? Whilst unpopular in some camps, due to the disruption they cause in breaking up momentum, our health and safety experts don’t think they should be red carded. When temperatures climb, as they’re expected to in the UK next week, even mild dehydration can affect concentration, decision-making and physical performance. A quick break for water can help prevent a much longer break caused by illness or injury. That's true whether you're chasing a World Cup win or working in a factory. Workplaces should consider the impact of hot weather through their risk assessments, particularly for outdoor activities. Alongside regular refreshment breaks, control measures might include access to shade, suitable clothing, sun protection as well as job rotation and multi-skilling to help keep people safe and productive. Not every safety measure is going to get a standing ovation, but some are worth it anyway. What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments.
