Watchmaking has a sonic asset. A minute repeater strikes two gongs in a sequence that varies with every pressing and disappears the moment it sounds. Not an alarm, a musical phrase. At Patek Philippe, watchmakers are trained to hear a tolerance issue in the escapement before it shows up in any measurement. At Audemars Piguet, the brighter, longer-decaying chime of a repeater is the result of deliberate choices across generations. It's not a byproduct, it's a signature. The next step is legal: several manufacturers are now filing sound trademarks for their chimes. Rolls-Royce (BMW Group) already did it for its door close. Horology is watching closely. But there's a gap. Connected watches still pair a decade-refined tick with the same generic notification ping as everything else. The brands that extend their acoustic identity into the digital layer, treating the app's sound with the same care as the movement's chime, will own something rare: continuity between analog and digital.
