#MahlerToday Rome, 1907 . Mahler was appointed to conduct two concerts in Rome with the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. The first program included Beethoven's "Eroica" Symphony, Wagner’s Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan and Isolde, and his Prelude to Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. The performance took place on this date in 1907. . Following this first concert, Roman critics praised Mahler's conducting. The Giornale d'Italia declared that, thanks to Mahler “...the Roman orchestra was transformed into a perfectly balanced ensemble, full of vigor”. Count San Martino, director of the Accademia de Santa Cecilia, praised his “extraordinarily effective gestures”. . Mahler took the opportunity to visit the city thoroughly, accompanied by Alma and Friedrich Spiro, a German art historian. .
