Do you really need more protein? It depends. ⚖️💪 You need a lot of protein! Or so you’d assume, marvelling at the branding of candy bars, cereals, and, bizarrely, coffee and indeed water. According to NUTRIM's Jorn Trommelen, PhD, this hype often misses the point and creates confusion about what we actually need. For most healthy adults, around 0.8 grams per kilo of bodyweight is enough to avoid deficiency, and most people already exceed that without trying. But context matters: athletes, older adults, or people in recovery may need more, with optimal muscle growth levelling off around 1.6 grams per kilo per day. Protein supports the building and repair of tissues across the whole body, not just muscles, and plays a constant role in maintaining our health. Still, more is not always better, especially when highly processed products use protein as a marketing tool rather than offering real nutritional value.
