Owners of family businesses often lack adequate preparation Owners of family businesses feel insufficiently prepared for their role. Research by the Maastricht University Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, led by UM Professor Anita Van Gils in collaboration with BDO Netherlands, shows that while succession in management is often well considered, ownership and its responsibilities receive far less attention. 41% of owners report inadequate preparation, often with limited family involvement and gaps in key areas such as strategy and financial knowledge. At the same time, over half of family businesses lack formal family governance. The findings highlight the need for clear agreements, defined roles, and proper preparation. Ownership is not just a transfer of shares, but a governance issue essential for continuity. Read the finding in more detail here: https://edu.nl/bf3nt #Governance #Leadership
