EQUITY ONLY

Liviu Librescu was a Romanian-born Israeli-American engineering professor, Holocaust survivor, and respected scientist whose life was marked by both brilliance and courage. Born in Romania in 1930 to a Jewish family, he survived the horrors of World War II and later built an extraordinary academic career in aerospace engineering, aerodynamics, and aeroelasticity. He studied in Bucharest, worked as a researcher in Romania, and later moved to Israel after facing political pressure under the Communist regime. From there, he eventually joined Virginia Tech in the United States, where he became a highly admired professor in engineering science and mechanics. Librescu became internationally known not only for his scientific work but for his heroism during the Virginia Tech shooting on April 16, 2007. When the gunman reached his classroom in Norris Hall, Librescu used his body to hold the door shut and told his students to escape through the windows. His actions gave almost all of them enough time to get out and survive. He was shot and killed while protecting them. He was 76 years old and became one of the most remembered victims of the tragedy because of his selfless bravery. After his passing, he was honored in multiple countries for both his scientific achievements and the heroic sacrifice that saved the lives of his students.
