What happens when learning moves from information to encounter? There is growing interest in relational approaches to learning - reflected in research on social and emotional learning, dialogic teaching and relational pedagogy. Attention is increasingly turning to how these ideas can be designed into meaningful learning experiences in schools. In this episode of the Global Citizenship Education Interview Series, Lyfta’s Director of Education and Impact Harriet Marshall, PhD joins Dr. Emiliano T. Bosio, Ph.D. to explore what this looks like in practice through the lens of Human Connection Pedagogy. The interview explores: • how relational approaches shape learner experience and classroom dialogue • the role of story-based learning in developing empathy, perspective-taking and global awareness • how we can think about impact and evidence in global citizenship education • the very important ethical considerations involved in representing lived experiences in the classroom One part of the interview may resonate with many: ‘Learning becomes deeper when students encounter people rather than simply consume information.’ These ideas underpin Lyfta’s work with schools and trusts through programmes such as Year of Values and Critical Digital & Media Literacy, which use immersive stories and guided dialogue to help students explore values, media narratives and global perspectives.
