A customer buys a necklace online. It looks attractive and completely safe at first glance. But it isn’t. In recent EU inspections, authorities found fashion jewelry sold online containing up to 1000x more toxic metals than allowed. Products that look like standard “fashion jewelry” ended up posing real health risks to consumers. Heavy metals don’t just “cause irritation” but they damage organs. They accumulate over time and can lead to osteoporosis. Even cancer. On top of these real human health effects, if you are a brand owner this can also lead to your brand value being significantly hit, with serious consequences. This is where the impact becomes real. It’s not just about someone copying your design or using your trademark. It’s about: - customers being exposed to unsafe materials - negative experiences linked back to your brand - trust being damaged without you even knowing it happened. From an IP and brand protection perspective, this changes the game. The issue is no longer just “is this infringement?” It becomes: - Where is this happening? - How widely is it spreading? - How quickly can it be identified and addressed? Because without systematic monitoring, response always comes too late. If a product that looks like yours is already on the market… but isn’t yours… Would you even know before your customers feel the consequences?
