He goes by Jimmy the Razor. The blade is not a metaphor. James Hickey is a hairstylist, a painter, and the owner of MJ Rose Salon on Hertel Avenue, which he opened with his wife Sarah in 2018 after years spent working it out elsewhere. "The prodigal son has returned," he said at the time. He meant the neighborhood. He meant Buffalo. I've wanted to make portraits of him for a long time, and the session lived up to it. One man, more than one craft, and one of the most genuinely cool people I know. This is part of an ongoing project photographing the people who give this city its character. More to come.
