🇬🇧 March 2022 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Ignacy Łukasiewicz, and January – the 140th anniversary of his death. Therefore, the Sejm of the Republic of Poland, appreciating the creator of the global oil industry and the scientist belonging to “the honourable group of Poles, whose activities had a great and positive impact on the development of our homeland, as well as the whole world”, established 2022 as the Year of Ignacy Łukasiewicz. Łukasiewicz was a Polish pharmacist, inventor of the kerosene lamp, entrepreneur, social and patriotic activist, and philanthropist. 🇬🇧 In 1852, together with Jan Zeh, he carried out the world’s first scientific distillation of crude oil. A year later, the first kerosene lamp was lit in the display window of the Lviv pharmacy “Pod Złotą Gwiazdą”. A tinsmith, Adam Bratkowski, helped Łukasiewicz with the construction of the lamp. Łukasiewicz’s kerosene lamp corresponded to the brightness of 10-15 candles. 🇬🇧 In 1854, together with Tytus Trzecieski in Bóbrka near Krosno, he founded the first crude oil mine in the world. 🇬🇧 Image depicting Ignacy Łukasiewicz: Grzegorz Bienias, PhD, DSc, ProfTit #Łukasiewicz
