#Leon #Bakst, Marc Chagall's teacher in St. Petersburg. Born to a Jewish family in Grodno, Lev Rosenberg studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Petersburg and at the Académie Julian in Paris where he deepened his knowledge of French art and approached #symbolism; in 1898 he founded the avant-garde group "Il #mondo #dell'arte" with the theatrical impresario #Djagilev. Bakst designed sets for Greek tragedies and in 1908 gained fame as the creator of the sets and costumes for Sergej Djagilev and his #Russian #Ballets, combining the refinement of French symbolism with Russian folk tradition. In this context he collaborated with some of the greatest composers of the time such as #Igor ' #Stravinskij, #Maurice #Ravel, #Reynaldo #Hahn and #Claude #Debussy. Among the most suggestive scenographies that he curated in their first execution are to remember: #Shéhérazade by #Rimsky- #Korsakov (1910), #Stravinsky's #Firebird (1910), #Debussy's #Prelude to the #Afternoon of a #Faun (1912), #Ravel's #Daphnis et #Chloé (1912), #Hahn's #Le #Dieu #Bleu (1912).
