Every time you send a ChatGPT message, you're using 10× more electricity than a Google search. Multiply that by hundreds of millions of users. Then multiply it by the explosive growth in AI model training, inference, and deployment. What you get is one of the most energy-hungry industries in human history, built, ironically, by some of the most innovative companies on earth. In 2024, global data centers consumed 415 terawatt-hours of electricity, roughly 1.5% of the world's total. Here's the startling statistic that stopped us at LFD: that's equivalent to Pakistan's entire annual electricity demand. Just from data centers. Just in the U.S., it's already over 4% of national consumption, and projected to more than double by 2030. AI is growing at 15% per year in energy terms. That's four times faster than every other sector combined. This Earth Day, it's worth asking: as we build smarter systems, are we building responsible ones? The good news is that efficiency gains are real; Google reduced per-prompt energy use 33× in a single year. The bad news is that the scale of expansion is outpacing those gains. The planet's most urgent problems and our most powerful tool to solve them are running on the same grid. How we manage that tension will define the next decade.
