With the increasing power density of AI chips, this has become a critical issue. NVIDIA's latest systems are shifting toward 𝘿𝙞𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙩-𝙩𝙤-𝘾𝙝𝙞𝙥 𝙇𝙞𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙙 𝘾𝙤𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜 . This approach circulates liquid through cold plates in direct contact with processors, rather than cooling the entire server room air. In theory, yes. In practice, several barriers remain. New data centers can be designed from the ground up for liquid cooling. This is already the trend among major cloud operators. Existing facilities, however, often require: - 𝙊𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙝𝙖𝙪𝙡𝙚𝙙 𝙥𝙡𝙪𝙢𝙗𝙞𝙣𝙜 - 𝙉𝙚𝙬 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙩 𝙚𝙭𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙧𝙨 -,𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙠𝙨 - 𝘼𝙙𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙢𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙘𝙚𝙙𝙪𝙧𝙚𝙨 These upgrades come at a significant cost. Moreover, even with liquid cooling, heat must still be rejected outside. Depending on the local climate and available infrastructure, a residual water need may remain, or be replaced by air‑cooling systems at the cost of higher electricity consumption. 𝙆𝙚𝙮 𝙗𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨 - 𝙈𝙞𝙘𝙧𝙤𝙨𝙤𝙛𝙩 - 𝙂𝙤𝙤𝙜𝙡𝙚 - 𝘼𝙢𝙖𝙯𝙤𝙣 𝙒𝙚𝙗 𝙎𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙚𝙨 - 𝙈𝙚𝙩𝙖 - 𝙈𝙖𝙟𝙤𝙧 𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙖 𝙘𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙨 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙀𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙭 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘿𝙞𝙜𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙡 𝙍𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙮 These players are currently building facilities capable of hosting very high‑density racks, where liquid cooling is gradually becoming the norm. 𝘼𝙣 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙞𝙣𝙣𝙤𝙫𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙖 𝙨𝙞𝙡𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙗𝙪𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙩 Water consumption reduction is real and can be dramatic in some cases. However, it does not mean data centers will no longer use water.
