Gamma-ray bursts are among the universe's most energetic events. Researchers at Los Alamos National Laboratory have made significant discoveries about long-duration gamma-ray bursts. Contrary to recent interpretations, the type of kilonova observed does not necessarily require the production of very heavy elements like gold and lead. “With our modeling and simulation of a new perspective on these two peculiar long-duration gamma-ray bursts, we’re gaining a new view on these complicated and fascinating extreme events,” said Marko Ristić, a Lab postdoctoral fellow.
