Don't turn your nose up at your poo just yet — it may reveal more about your liver health than you think. Using stool samples from patients from Singapore, Thailand, China and India, researchers from LKCMedicine have discovered a protein in the gut that may help identify people at risk of developing fatty liver disease before serious damage occurs. Led by Associate Professor Andrew Tan, Vice Dean of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, the study found that a protein known as angiopoietin-like 4 may play a key role in the development of a “leaky gut”. This allows bacteria to pass from the gut into the liver, potentially triggering inflammation and promoting fat accumulation. With fatty liver disease on the rise in Singapore, this research could pave the way for easier, non-invasive screening using stool samples that are already collected for health screenings.
