As I settle into my final year of University, I’ve found myself reflecting on the incredible summer I spent in America. Returning to Camp Kennybrook in New York was an easy decision after such a meaningful first experience. This summer, I worked as a lifeguard, coordinating and overseeing daily water activities and ensuring camper safety. Alongside this, I was a general counsellor for the middle division (aged 10-11) where I helped guide campers through routines, activities and free time. As a returning staff member, I was entrusted with greater responsibility, often stepping up as a group leader. This was a demanding but fulfilling experience, helping to lead both campers and counsellors. A highlight was being selected as a Color War General, one of the highest honours at camp. Over five days, I led my team of 200 campers and counsellors through competitions ranging from sports and songs to rope burn and an apache relay, ending the week with a win on the final night!! After camp, I had the privilege to volunteer for The ELM Project / Camp AmeriKids, a nonprofit camp for children living with or affected by sickle cell and aids. Teaching archery and helping create a positive space was incredibly rewarding. To round off the summer, I was lucky enough to travel some of the US, visiting Boston before camp, New York during and Florida, Miami and Tennessee afterwards. Celebrating my 21st in Miami was the perfect way to end such a memorable and meaningful few months.
