🌙 Today, our colleague Marion Ebel had the pleasure of presenting LightingEurope’s position on artificial light at night (ALAN) at the Leinster ALAN Conference 2026 at Maynooth University. 🙏 Thank you to the organisers and in particular Lisa Hallinan for the invitation. 💡 Artificial lighting is an essential part of our daily lives. When it’s well designed, using quality products and smart control systems, it creates the right conditions for all kinds of activities, whether it’s transport, work, sport, leisure, or play. Good lighting not only enables these activities, but also contributes to people’s wellbeing, comfort, safety, and security. 🌍 We light for humans, and their visual spectrum needs and this of course influences the environment. Within all lighting applications the effect on the natural environment including fauna and flora must be considered as well as the effects of obtrusive lighting, sky glow and light nuisance. It is a balance of needs versus concerns. 📝 When creating the specifications for a new lighting system, sufficient consideration should be given to the purpose of the lighting system to be installed, so that: • All light should have a clear purpose • Light is directed only to where it’s needed. • Light is not brighter than necessary. • Light is adapted to suit the task activities or turned off when not required. 🤝 LightingEurope looks forward to further collaborating with national and EU regulators to ensure that there is a more harmonised framework on light at night in the long term in Europe. 🔗 Check our website for more detail on our work and detailed recommendations: https://lnkd.in/ev656n5k #LightingEurope #ALAN #ArtificialLightAtNight #OutdoorLighting
