"𝗔𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲......" “𝗔𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘆 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝗽 𝗮𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀.” I heard these things over and over during my undergraduate days.😓 Honestly, it was 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿. No student deserves to feel their discipline; whether art, science, or commerce, is “useless.” Like many others, I originally wanted 𝗠𝗕𝗕𝗦, but I ended up in Anatomy at the University of Ilorin, Nigeria And oh… the silent questions in my head: 𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘥𝘰 𝘸𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘺 𝘴𝘰 𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘪𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦’𝘴 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘥𝘭𝘺 “𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦” 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘶𝘴?💔 𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘤𝘢𝘯’𝘵 𝘈𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘮𝘺 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘧𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘚𝘶𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘺, 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘦 𝘔𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘸𝘯?🥲 It was tough. I questioned myself a lot, should I go back to medicine, or stick with Anatomy? But over time, I realised something important: 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲. 𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗲𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘆.😌 𝗪𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗼𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀. 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗻𝗼𝘁 "𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗼𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀". There’s so much more for Anatomists than people realise. Becoming a medical doctor is just one of many paths. While some may choose to work in mortuaries, many others are also thriving in 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵, 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀, 𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆, 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗰𝘀, 𝗮𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗮, 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, and beyond. Unfortunately, many students are often told that working in a mortuary is the only option, which can feel limiting. To anyone feeling stuck or frustrated: you are not alone. In my next post, I’ll share 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱𝘀 for students and graduates. As I start my 𝗘𝗺𝗯𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆, I just felt this needed to be shared.
