The Los Angeles Electrical Training Institute demonstrates how existing buildings can be reimagined to achieve ambitious sustainability goals. Completed in 2016, the 145,000-square-foot renovation transformed an existing facility into what was recognized as the largest net-zero-energy commercial retrofit in the United States. The project combines passive and active design strategies, including exterior solar shading, electrochromic glass, high-reflectance roofing, high-efficiency mechanical systems, real-time building performance monitoring, and lighting/occupancy controls to maximize energy efficiencies. As a training center developed by IBEW Local 11 and NECA Los Angeles, Net Zero Plus ETI serves as a living laboratory where apprentices, industry professionals, and building owners can experience emerging energy technologies in action. The facility was created to demonstrate how buildings can use, produce, store, and monitor energy more efficiently while supporting workforce development for the next generation of electrical professionals. A new hydrogen lab and a DC lighting project fed directly from solar panels are currently underway. Delivered by Delawie.
