At the edge of the world-famous Perito Moreno Glacier, a team of researchers set out to document something rarely seen: a cave forming within the ice. In 2017, a research project led by La Venta Esplorazioni Geografiche and Spélé’Ice combined terrestrial laser scanning and UAV data to study the entrance of a contact cave at the glacier’s edge. One goal was to capture precise data that could help scientists understand how quickly glacial ice is changing over time. Using the Leica ScanStation P40, the team captured high-quality 3D data and HDR imagery from distances of up to 270 m. The resulting dataset was used to create an interactive 3D model of the cave, now publicly available for exploration.
