40 Moments with Bernhard | Anecdote 6 Research often begins where conventional solutions reach their limits. When Bernhard Lederer was asked to develop a mechanical watch for German Navy, the challenge was unlike any traditional anti-magnetic project. Rather than simply resisting magnetic fields, the watch itself could not retain any measurable magnetism, as even minimal residual magnetism could activate the magnetic sensors used by naval mines. Meeting this objective required years of research into specialized materials, dedicated manufacturing equipment, and entirely new production methods. The result exceeded every expectation. During testing, the laboratory responsible for evaluating the watch initially believed its measuring instruments had malfunctioned, as they repeatedly displayed zero residual magnetism — something they had never previously observed. Subsequent testing under magnetic fields reaching 100,000 gausses confirmed the achievement. It is a reminder that the most meaningful discoveries rarely begin with certainty. They begin with the willingness to keep searching. #40MomentsWithBernhard #BernhardLederer #LEDERER #LEDERER40Anniversary
