We often think that "watching" people ensures performance. We implement trackers, demand constant status updates, and mistake micromanagement for "staying on top of things." But here is the hard truth: Monitoring produces compliance, but only trust produces excellence. People don't give their best when they feel watched; they give their best when they feel trusted. When you watch someone, you signal that you’re waiting for a mistake. That pressure kills creativity and breeds a "play it safe" mentality. But when you trust someone, you give them the psychological safety to innovate, to take ownership, and to go the extra mile because they want to—not because they have to. If you want to unlock the full potential of your team, stop looking over their shoulders and start looking into their aspirations. Give them the autonomy to fly. Trust is the ultimate performance enhancer.
