The International Law Section is looking forward to welcoming delegates to the first session of the ILS International Law and Practice Course 2026 in Sydney on 𝗧𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝟱 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲. Professor Ben Saul will speak on the topic of ‘New "wars on terror": defending human rights through the United Nations in a world on fire’. As the Special Rapporteur on human rights and counter-terrorism, an independent UN expert, Professor Saul will explain how the “Special Procedures” mechanisms of the Geneva-based UN Human Rights Council work to protect human rights in the current climate. The session will focus on:  • the purpose, origins and evolution of the system;  • functions of experts include formal communications with States, country visits, reports to the General Assembly and Human Rights Council, diplomacy, court interventions, inquiries, law-making, advocacy, and engagement with victims and civil society;  • the role of the counter-terrorism mandate in an era of new illegal “wars on terror” and through engaging with the UN security architecture in New York, and  • the political, institutional and financial constraints threatening to cripple the system and abandon victims of international crimes and other serious rights violations.   For more details or to register, visit 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gDwErmcA #internationallaw
