In recognition of Juneteenth, we take a moment to reflect on its significance as a commemoration of freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of equity. It is also an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the many contributions of African American leaders whose work continues to shape the fields of biomedical research and animal care. We would like to highlight two individuals whose impact is particularly relevant to our work: • Dr. James E.K. Hildreth – An eminent immunologist and infectious disease researcher, Dr. Hildreth has made major contributions to HIV/AIDS research. Much of his translational work has relied on nonhuman primate (NHP) models to better understand viral pathogenesis and to develop therapeutics. • Dr. Sherry L. Rowland – A trailblazing veterinarian and researcher, Dr. Rowland has played a critical role in the clinical care, welfare, and management of NHP colonies. Her work has been essential to supporting vaccine and therapeutic development efforts at U.S. National Primate Research Centers. Their contributions reflect the vital role of diversity in advancing science, improving animal care, and strengthening the impact of our collective work. savescienceoregon.org https://lnkd.in/gRKfHbY7
