500 shared electric cars, being deployed across Utrecht, with 2 MW of charging and discharging capacity. Cars that give power back to the grid when the city needs it most. The picture is easy to like. The operational side is harder, and it gets far less attention. At Power2Drive recently, our Director of Strategy & Innovation Luuk van Kuik and Robin Berg of We Drive Solar got into what it actually takes to run V2G at city scale. Two challenges stand out. 1. Settlement, and this one is ours to solve. Payment systems were built for buying energy, not selling it back. With V2G, a single charging session can split into two transactions. Tariffs change every fifteen minutes. Values can be positive or negative. Each carries its own VAT treatment. Our platform handles all of it: settling every flow, applying the right VAT, and reconciling it between driver, fleet, operator and grid. 2. Grid code. Bidirectional power has to meet strict requirements for frequency response and stability, agreed with the grid operator. In Utrecht, We Drive Solar worked out a first-of-its-kind arrangement with Stedin, the regional DSO. V2G at this scale needs a platform that holds all of it together.
