🔥The Lancet Infectious Diseases’ June 2026 Issue is live now! 📢 This month’s issue features characteristics of patients hospitalised with mpox (subclade Ib/2023sh) in DR Congo. 💡Luis Flores Girón, Gustavo Sganzerla Martinez and colleagues conducted an observational cohort study with patients admitted with suspected mpox to the reference centre of mpox treatment at Lwiro Hospital, South Kivu, DR Congo. Descriptive analyses and statistics summarised the clinical and epidemiological profiles of participants with molecular confirmation of MPXV subclade Ib/2023sh. 📊Mpox virus subclade Ib was detected in 77% of the 643 participants. Individuals aged 15 years or younger were 61% of the participants. Fever (90%), skin rash or lesions (79%), and dysphagia (56%) were the dominant symptoms or signs. Children aged 0–5 years had a higher frequency of lesions on the head, face, neck, back, arms, palm of hand, chest, posterior aspect of thighs, legs, dorsal foot, and oral cavity. Oral cavity and oropharynx swabs were able to detect MPXV subclade Ib/2023sh in the absence of assayable skin lesions. 🔦 High proportion of children and adolescents (aged ≤15 years) differentiates this cohort from other clinical descriptions of MPXV subclade Ib/2023sh. Targeted public health measures should consider ways to reduce transmission among children and adolescents.
