๐ฌ A bacterial infection can destroy entire bee colonies โ the causative agent is the spore-forming bacterium ๐๐๐๐ฃ๐๐๐๐๐๐ก๐ก๐ช๐จ ๐ก๐๐ง๐ซ๐๐. ๐๐ข๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ช๐ฃ๐ข๐ค๐ช๐ญ๐ญ๐ถ๐ด ๐ญ๐ข๐ณ๐ท๐ข๐ฆ causes American foulbrood, a notifiable disease affecting honeybee larvae. Infection begins when bee larvae ingest bacterial spores while feeding. In the larval midgut, the spores germinate, and the vegetative cells penetrate the gut epithelium.ย The bacteria then multiply within the larval body cavity and produce new spores. Infected larvae eventually die and form a characteristic foulbrood scale, a dark mass containing large numbers of spores. Typical signs of infection include:ย - sunken or perforated brood capsย - dark larval remains in cellsย - irregular brood patterns The high resistance of the spores facilitates the spread of the disease within and between colonies. ๐ More background information on ๐๐ข๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ช๐ฃ๐ข๐ค๐ช๐ญ๐ญ๐ถ๐ด ๐ญ๐ข๐ณ๐ท๐ข๐ฆ can be found in ๐๐ฆ-๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฎ โ ๐ผ๐๐ฟ ๐๐ป๐ฐ๐๐ฐ๐น๐ผ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฎ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ถ๐๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ฏ๐ถ๐ผ๐น๐ผ๐ด๐. #lspedia #Paenibacilluslarvae #LifeSciences
