๐Ÿ”ฌ A bacterial infection can destroy entire bee colonies โ€“ the causative agent is the spore-forming bacterium ๐™‹๐™–๐™š๐™ฃ๐™ž๐™—๐™–๐™˜๐™ž๐™ก๐™ก๐™ช๐™จ ๐™ก๐™–๐™ง๐™ซ๐™–๐™š. ๐˜—๐˜ข๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ฃ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ถ๐˜ด ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ท๐˜ข๐˜ฆ causes American foulbrood, a notifiable disease affecting honeybee larvae. Infection begins when bee larvae ingest bacterial spores while feeding. In the larval midgut, the spores germinate, and the vegetative cells penetrate the gut epithelium.ย The bacteria then multiply within the larval body cavity and produce new spores. Infected larvae eventually die and form a characteristic foulbrood scale, a dark mass containing large numbers of spores. Typical signs of infection include:ย  - sunken or perforated brood capsย  - dark larval remains in cellsย  - irregular brood patterns The high resistance of the spores facilitates the spread of the disease within and between colonies. ๐Ÿ“š More background information on ๐˜—๐˜ข๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ฃ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ถ๐˜ด ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ท๐˜ข๐˜ฆ can be found in ๐—Ÿ๐—ฆ-๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ฎ โ€“ ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ ๐—˜๐—ป๐—ฐ๐˜†๐—ฐ๐—น๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ฎ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—Ÿ๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐— ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ฏ๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—น๐—ผ๐—ด๐˜†. #lspedia #Paenibacilluslarvae #LifeSciences
