The Arcadian bliss of Andrea Riccio… This bronze oil lamp was created by the great Renaissance bronze master - Andrea Riccio (c. 1470–1532). Poetic Here Daphnis, son of Hermes, whom the god Pan taught to play the reed flute and who is credited with inventing pastoral poetry: a classical literary form revived in Padua during the Renaissance - were this bronze was cast c. 1520–1530. Here, he offers a poetic vision of Arcadian bliss, an ideal cherished by Renaissance humanists and scholars, who constituted Riccio’s primary clientele Riccio Riccio started his career in Padua as a goldsmith, but a chronic ailment forced him to specialize in bronze, which was less physically demanding. He first worked with Bartolomeo Bellano (1437–1496), a pupil of Donatello, with whom he created several large bronze monuments for the Basilica of Saint Anthony.
