Hygiene Awareness Campaign: Addressing Poor Environmental Hygiene (Surroundings & Living Conditions) in Gullapalli Village As part of the Academic Social Internship 2026 at KL Deemed to be University, I carried out a Hygiene Awareness Campaign under the internship domain "Poor Environmental Hygiene (Surroundings & Living Conditions)." This field-based project was conducted in Gullapalli Village, Arumbaka, Andhra Pradesh, with the objective of understanding hygiene challenges and promoting awareness among the local community. Objective The primary objective of this internship was to identify environmental hygiene issues, interact with different stakeholders, and encourage villagers to adopt better sanitation and hygiene practices for a healthier living environment. Activities Conducted During the internship, I: Conducted surveys with households, sanitation workers, and Panchayat representatives. Observed environmental and hygiene conditions in the village. Identified major sanitation challenges through field visits. Organized a Hygiene Awareness Campaign to educate villagers about personal hygiene, waste management, and environmental cleanliness. Interacted with children, adults, and elderly residents to encourage community participation. Key Findings The survey revealed that the major environmental hygiene concerns included: Improper waste disposal in some public areas. Stagnant water leading to mosquito breeding. Limited community participation in cleanliness activities. Need for continuous hygiene awareness programs. Financial constraints affecting sanitation improvements despite Panchayat efforts. The Panchayat has been conducting regular monitoring and awareness activities, but stronger public participation and improved waste management are essential for long-term improvement. Student Intervention As part of the intervention, I conducted awareness sessions on: Personal hygiene practices. Proper handwashing. Waste segregation and disposal. Importance of clean surroundings. Prevention of water-borne and mosquito-borne diseases. The villagers actively participated in the discussions and responded positively to the campaign. Recommendations Increase public awareness through continuous campaigns. Encourage active participation from all community members. Improve sanitation infrastructure with adequate financial support. Conclusion This internship provided valuable practical exposure to community engagement and public health awareness. It enhanced my communication, leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills while allowing me to contribute towards improving environmental hygiene in the village. I sincerely thank KL Deemed to be University, the faculty mentors, Panchayat representatives, sanitation workers, and the residents of Gullapalli Village for their guidance and support throughout this internship.
