Throwing it back to the late 1990s and this pediatric playroom designed for Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, Virginia. At a time when many healthcare environments still felt highly institutional, this space was designed to transport young patients somewhere entirely different. Throughout the pediatric unit, the ceiling told a story—transitioning from sunrise to sunset as patients moved through the space. In the playroom, a cove-lit night sky came alive with fiber optic lights that reflected constellations visible in the Shenandoah Valley at different times of the year. đŸŒŒ Playful animal silhouettes, interactive activities, and destination-style architectural features helped create an environment centered on imagination, discovery, and comfort rather than the clinical nature of a hospital. It's a reminder that healthcare design has always been about more than function. Sometimes the most meaningful spaces are the ones that spark wonder, provide a distraction, and let kids simply be kids. #ThrowbackThursday #TBT #HealthcareDesign #PediatricDesign #InteriorDesign #DesignThrowback
