Are Board Directors just “potted plants”? Warren Buffett seems to think so. I disagree. It's probably folly to go aginst the Oracle of Omaha. So let's listen to what he says first regarding Boards. Buffet suggests the Board has three main tasks: 1️⃣ Hire the CEO. 2️⃣ Keep egos in check. 3️⃣ Offer outside perspectives. With apparently 90% of the job being done in #1 But, I believe this is quite an outdated take. Boards today are anything but passive. They’re active, dynamic, and deeply involved. Here’s what modern Boards actually do: 👉 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗿𝘂𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 ↳ Everything tech to climate change, they lead. 👉 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 ↳ ESG, compliance, and DEI aren’t afterthoughts. 👉 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆. ↳ They make bold decisions, not just review plans. 👉 𝗠𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸. ↳ Safeguarding cybersecurity to financial downturns. 👉 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲. ↳ They don’t just oversee; they push for breakthroughs. The days of only showing up for meetings are long gone. Hiring the CEO is just step one. The real work begins when challenges arise. And this has created an enourmous opportunity: Boards are no longer just for retired CXOs. The modern shift means professionals like you and me: • strategists • technologists • finance experts • industry specialists • Specific skillset holders Are all in enourmous demand. Regardless of your: • Not having decades of experience • Not having an executive-title • Not having certifications • Not being "networked" Buffett’s take misses the mark. Modern Boards do more - and must do more. And that’s why Boards need Directors who aren't just... "𝗣𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀" --- Agree? Disagree? Let me know in the comments. Seen an active Board in action?
