Sea level rise? Land level rise! The climate is in transition, and the architectural world is gathering this month for the UIA World Congress of Architects 2026 Barcelona to answer a critical question: how do we design for a changing planet? Instead of just fighting the water, a visionary team of Dutch designers - Dirk Sijmons, Lodewijk van Nieuwenhuijze (H+N+S Landscape Architects), Ro Koster (RO&AD Architecten), and Herman Kossmann (Kossmanndejong) - alongside a collective of scientists and artists, are flipping the script. The result? Flood-retaining landscapes that gradually rise along with the sea level. Through a monumental 8-minute film, 16 spectacular peepboxes (kijkdozen), and large school charts, the exhibition shows how we can create robust, self-sustaining ecosystems that don't need to be protected, but instead, ultimately protect us. Missed the Barcelona debut? Don't worry. To bring this vital story to a wider audience, the exhibition will tour the Netherlands later this year. Starting at the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR) in September. #Architecture #ClimateAdaptation #Sustainability #UIA2026 #WaterManagement #Innovation #LandscapeArchitecture #IABR #NatureBasedSolutions
