With the recent attention given to everyone's favorite Rooftoppers and their engagement on the top of the Empire State Building, I was reminded of a package we did for Runner’s World. It was a package of three stories about unusual races. We’re talking vertically challenging skyscraper races, run-for-your-life fox hunting chases in which runners are the quarry, and self-invented off-season marathons around the neighborhood. Working from the idea of “Off the Beaten Path,” I wanted to capture the idea that yes, there are the officially sanctioned races that anyone can sign up for, but what happens if you branch off from that and do something different? So I enlisted Josh Cochran (who I worked with a lot in those days) to create illustrations of a DIY street sign with our different races snaking all around, as well as spot illos for the three stories themselves (branded as Urban, Rural, and Solo races). Urban: “High Anxiety” - A slightly neurotic runner stares down his fears, one step at time, by running up the stairs of the Empire State Building. Rural: “The Thrill of the Chase” - Fox hunting with a twist. The horses pursue the hounds and the hounds chase the quarry. In this case, runners. Solo: “My Way” - One suburban family man improvises his own NYC Marathon as a way to revisit his youth.
