Duty of Memory – Marjorie Stewart Joyner, born October 24, 1896 and died December 27, 1994: Marjorie Stewart Joyner was an African-American pioneer in the field of cosmetology, entrepreneur, philanthropist, educator and civil rights activist. She revolutionized the beauty industry by inventing the perm machine, a device designed to curl straight hair and smooth curly hair thanks to multiple heating tips. (Joyner is recognized as the first African-American black woman to have created and patented a perm machine, in addition to her career in hair care); « The invention consisted of 16 rods connected to an electric cord inside a drying helmet, thus allowing the perms to be made much faster » Joyner helped draft the first laws on cosmetology in Illinois and founded the Association of Beauty School Owners and Teachers United with Mary Bethune McLeod in 1945.
