Age didn't stop any of these people. Why should it stop you? 1. Oscar Niemeyer had already designed the Pampulha complex at 36 (1943) and the main buildings of Brasília between 49 and 53 (1956–1960). He kept designing until over 100, while later, after completing the Niterói Contemporary Art Museum at 88 (1996). 2. Pablo Picasso had already been an established painter for decades when he painted Guernica, at 55 (1937). 3. Jacques Cousteau founded the Cousteau Society at 63 (1973) and kept leading expeditions into his 80s. 4. Charles Darwin published "On the Origin of Species" at 50 (1859). 5. Lise Meitner co-discovered nuclear fission at 60 (1938). 6. Nicolaus Copernicus published "De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium" at 70 (1543). 7. Zaha Hadid became the first woman to win the Pritzker Prize at 54 (2004). 8. Rita Levi-Montalcini won the Nobel Prize in Medicine at 77 (1986) and kept researching and serving as a lifetime senator in Italy until age 103. 9. Maria Lenk had two swimming careers: one as an Olympic athlete in the 1930s, another that restarted at 65 (1980) in Masters competition — at 78, she published her last book and, at 90, she was still breaking world records. Now imagine a world without Brasília. Without Guernica. Without the theory of evolution. Without nuclear physics as we understand it. Without the Pritzker going to a woman for the first time. Without nerve growth factor, or the science it unlocked. None of it would have happened if any of these nine had decided 50 was the finish line. #SecondAct #Longevity #KOMPASSIUM #DoersNotSayers Image credits: Maria Lenke: Von Rose Brasil/ABr - Agência Brasil [1], CC BY 3.0 br, https://lnkd.in/e4cyzE3D Jacques Costeau: By Hans Peters for Anefo . - https://lnkd.in/ezQCbtdq, CC0, https://lnkd.in/eCE2TS2z Oscar Niemeyer: Von Oscar_Niemeyer.jpg (filtered to B/W): Valter Campanato/ABrderivative work: MachoCarioca (talk) - Oscar_Niemeyer.jpg, CC BY 2.5 br, https://lnkd.in/e-WkW368 Copernicus: Von Christoph Murer, Tobias Stimmer - Icones, p. 36, Gemeinfrei, https://lnkd.in/eXA7x9Ge Lise Meitner: Von Harris & Ewing - File:Lise Meitner.tif, Gemeinfrei, https://lnkd.in/efXjJEr7 Rita Levi-Montalcini: By Kurt Hagblom, Firma Hagblom-Foto, restored by Adam Cuerden - University Library, Lund University URL: https://lnkd.in/eiaZtxnj, Public Domain, https://lnkd.in/etNaedag By Dmitry Ternovoy - https://lnkd.in/eZbkWcgM, FAL, https://lnkd.in/ecDddmav
