FIGHTING #lightpollution #3 : Christmas lights and their impact on the night and the environment The countdown to Christmas has begun! Maybe you are hanging up your first Christmas decoration? 🎄 Not so fast! Did you know that 150 million light sets are sold in America each year ? As lighting consultants and designers, this figure can only worry us, for several reasons: - Christmas lights use a lot of energy. When it comes to Christmas, many people abandon all of their goals of keeping energy consumption low. The fact that Christmas garlands are made of LEDs which allow to reduce “up to 70% of our energy consumption”, should not be an excuse to light it for longer, nor to use more of it. - The light pollution generated by Christmas lights has an impact on the environment: they not only disturb the flora and fauna, but they also affect people and our metabolism. Do they become waste because they don’t work anymore, or even worse : because they are tangled? Are they reused, in which case we can predict an increase in festive lighting each and every year? Faced with these concerns, here are some tips from kobi lighting studio for a more sustainable and ethical Christmas decoration in 2021: - Put your lights on a timer: no need to light your tree at 3 am. - Resist the temptation to add more lighting: LED garlands are ultimately not so economical when you add more than necessary - Consider other decorating options such as ornaments, artificial plants and ribbons to keep the Christmas spirit alive - Store your decorations with care so you can reuse them the following year Festive season shouldn’t mean more light !
