Ā The ECHA/EFSA Guidance document on the impact of water treatment processes on residues of active substances or their metabolites in drinking water is now officially in force. Its objective is to assess whether processes like chlorination or ozonation could transform active substances or their metabolites into harmful residues in drinking water. Ā š¹ šš½š½š¹š¶š°š®šÆš¶š¹š¶šš š±š®šš²: applies to active substance approvals/renewals and biocidal product authorisations submitted on or after š šš½šæš¶š¹ š®š¬š®š² š¹ š„š²šš¶š²š š½šæš¼š“šæš®šŗšŗš² š²š š²šŗš½šš¶š¼š»: active substances in the review programme are not subject to the guidance š¹ ššŗš½š®š°š š¼š» š½šæš¼š±šš°š š®šššµš¼šæš¶šš®šš¶š¼š»š: even where an active substance was approved without this assessment, new authorisations or renewals submitted from 1 April 2026 require a specific assessment based on formulation and intended use Ā Feedback from our Q&A sessions at major Biocide events has highlighted ongoing concerns: data requirements and costs, unknown CRO capacities, study timelines, and confusion over who bears responsibility for data generation, active substance suppliers versus product manufacturers.
