Geologic Photo of the Week 📍 Earth Pyramids of Ritten, South Tyrol, Italy These striking formations—known as earth pyramids—are some of the most spectacular examples of erosional landforms in the European Alps. While visually similar to hoodoos (a term more common in North America), the term earth pyramids is geologically accurate for these Alpine features, which form in glacial deposits rather than sedimentary rock. The earth pyramids of Ritten are formed from glacial till, a poorly sorted material left behind after the Würm glaciation, containing everything from fine clay to large boulders. Capstones (boulders) play a crucial role: they shield the underlying sediments from rain erosion, allowing tall columns to persist while the surrounding material is washed away. Shaped by differential erosion, rainwater runoff, and freeze-thaw cycles over decades to centuries. These formations are a dynamic result of natural processes—but climate change is altering their future. Increased rainfall intensity and shifting freeze-thaw cycles may accelerate erosion, threatening the development and stability of new columns. A reminder that even the most iconic landscapes can be geologically short-lived, constantly reshaped by both natural forces and modern climate shifts.
