Fusion research at #KITKarlsruhe in the spotlight of the federal government: Today, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited the KIT stand at the HANNOVER MESSE. Together with Federal Minister of Research, Technology, and Space Dorothee Bär and Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Katherina Reiche, his interest focused on the so-called “first wall”, the Tritium Breeding Blanket, a crucial step towards a future fusion reactor. Jan S Hesthaven, President of KIT, presented the current state of research and the importance of the first wall to the Chancellor. Hesthaven thanked the federal government for its support, noting that fusion research at KIT is unique worldwide. The Federal Chancellor expressed his appreciation for the work being carried out at KIT. “We need fusion technology!” said Merz. He reiterated his ambition that the first fusion reactor should be built in Germany, emphasizing that KIT’s work is indispensable to achieving this goal.
