What a delight to serve as faculty for The Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth Global Insight Expedition course (#GIX) in Japan 🇯🇵 last month. The topic our students investigated? "Navigating Innovation in the ‘Silver Economy.’” We engaged with with C-suite executives from LIXIL, Panasonic, Mitsubishi Electric, SECOM Plc, Merck Group, NTT DOCOMO, and Quinn Emanuel, who are all innovating to capture the economic opportunity presented by the country’s demographic changes. We learned how government officials at the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (#MHLW) are strategizing to address the societal impact of a dramatically aging 👵🏻population. We chatted with with students🧑🏻‍🎓at Kaichi Nihonbashi Gauen Junior and Senior High School (#KNG) to hear how these young people are preparing to enter the work force and adapt to the demographic realities that will emerge between now and 2050. Here’s what my #Tuck students observed after nearly two weeks of deep immersion, transparent executive-level discussions and engagement with top-level executives: ✅ “What impressed me the most was not a single solution, but the range of strategies that Japanese firms are deploying to adapt to the aging population” ✅ “…Aging is not an abstract macro trend in Japan. It is the organizing reality of the country’s economy, its policy choices, and increasingly, its business limitations.” ✅ “Leading effectively in 2050 will require more than technical expertise; it will demand policy fluency, analytical rigor, and the discipline to balance financial returns with long-term social outcomes. The GIX experience reinforced that the hardest leadership challenges require navigating the trade-offs between cost, culture, regulation and innovation with clarity and intention.” ✅ “Japan showed me what adaptation actually looks like in a mature, constrained system - and how difficult it is to innovate meaningfully when culture, regulation, and legacy systems all move slowly.” And BTW, we also soaked up culture 🪭, cuisine 🍜 and history ⛩️ in abundance during our whirlwind trip.
