Hospitals and universities are transforming drug development. A new study from The Dickson Poon School of Law has found that repurposing existing medicines through late‑stage trials in hospitals and universities operates at up to 90% lower cost. This “hidden” research system exists outside the patent system and could offer safe, effective and affordable treatments. Dr Johnathon Liddicoat, Reader of Law at King's and lead author, said: “This alternative research system offers enormous potential to help patients at a fraction of the cost, and governments around the world are starting programmes to formally recognise the research in the system.
